About Our Conductor, Rhendle Millen

Rhendle MillenRhendle Michael Millen received a Bachelor of Music from Memphis State University (now the University of Memphis), a Master of Music from the University of Alabama, and a Doctor of Musical Arts from Memphis State. Since 1983, he has been on the faculty of St. Mary's Episcopal School in Memphis, Tennessee where he teaches Instrumental Music, Music History, Music Theory, and Humanities, conducts the Instrumental Ensembles, and serves as Chair of the Performing Arts department.

He was awarded the St. Mary's Alumnae Association Creative Teacher Award in 1990, and a University of Chicago Distinguished Teacher Award in 1996.

In addition to his duties at St. Mary's, he is the Director of Music at Shady Grove Presbyterian Church in Memphis, and has been a guest conductor for such groups as the River City Concert Band, the Memphis State University Orchestra and Symphonic Band, and Roscoe's Surprise Orchestra.

A former president of the Memphis Composer's Alliance, there have been numerous performances of his works throughout the United States at such venues as the American Society of Composer's Regional Conference in Miami, Florida, and Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and the Flute Festival '87 in Nagadoches, Texas. Dr. Millen has been awarded three times the Johannes Smit Composition Award, twice Naiomi Haimson Composition Prize, the Mu Phi Epsilon Composition Award at the University of Alabama, and in 1988 was named the Greater Memphis Music Teachers' Association Composer of the Year.

His memberships include the Music Educators' National Conference, the Tennessee Music Educators' Association, and the West Tennessee School Band and Orchestra Association.
